Wadena is an Ojibway word meaning "little round hill." When the Northern Pacific Railroad crossed the country in 1872, a new town formed around the depot 15 miles west of the old post and was given the name Wadena after the old townsite.

Wadena, located at the crossroads of Highways 71 and 10, is nestled in the heart of Central Minnesota, surrounded by numerous lakes and rivers. With a population of 4,300 residents, the city serves as the county seat. Wadena County has a population of approximately 13,713 residents.
